Temporary Low German Mennonite Liaison Worker

Description

As a member of the Learner Services team of Horizon School Division, the liaison worker plays an integral role in supporting students, families, and staff across the region.

Duties and responsibilities of the position include:

  1. Work cooperatively with school principals to facilitate the education of Low German Mennonite children
  2. Build trust and understanding between Horizon School Division No. 67 and Low German Mennonite families
  3. Work as a member of the learning team with school personnel in order to assist students to overcome difficulties and develop their full potential
  4. Enhance communication between home and school by providing translation services
  5. Promote increased understanding and appreciation of Low German Mennonite culture
  6. Bridge home and school by promoting parental involvement in school events, projects (cooking or sewing for example) or other opportunities
  7. Liaise with other resources/agencies and make necessary referrals

The successful candidate’s qualifications will include:

  • Student-centered individual able to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Knowledge and understanding of Low German Mennonite culture and language

  • Working knowledge of community agencies and supports
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience in working with all age groups
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with valid vehicle insurance and registration
  • High school diploma; post-secondary education not required but preferred

Shortlisting for this opportunity begins January 17, 2018 and position will commence as soon as possible, after interviews, and conclude June 28, 2018; there is a possibility this position will be re-posted as a regular position for the next school year. Work week includes approximately 30 hours per week.
